One issue with including Level of Effort activities inside a project withe near 100% discrete work is how to adjust the duration of this LOE work as the discrete work changes duration. Typically an LOE tasks would be Project Management or Project Controls. This work is conducted over the period of performance of the discrete work - within a work package or even across the entire period of performance of the project. Here's the initial situation. There are some discrete tasks with durations, but I want the project management Level of Effort (LOE) task to cover the period of performance for these tasks.
I can look at the schedule - 4.4 weeks, and make the duration of the LOE tasks that. But then when the discrete tasks change, I'll have to readjust the LOE task. A real pain.
MSFT Project has a cleaver ability to "paste as a link." What I need to do is past the duration of the summary Task "Project Activities" into the duration of the Level of Effort Task.
Copy the Duration value from the Summary task and Paste Special, selecting the Paste Link.
The result is a "link" between the duration of the LOE task and the duration of thge summary task, which of course is the duration of all the tasks underneath the Summary task.
Increase some task durations and the LOE task duratuoin increases automatically
Thanks to Mark Montegue of Lewis & Fowler, our mutual employer for this approach. There are 100's of little secerts of MSFT Project. This is one of the more useful ones.
