Brad Egland has a nice post about the Work Breakdown Structure. The guidance for the WBS is being updated. MIL-STD-881C is coming this summer. 881C like 881B describes the WBS as:
- A product-oriented family tree composed of hardware, software, services, data, and facilities.
- The WBS displays and defines the product(s) to be developed and/or produced. It relates the elements of work to be accomplished to each other and to the end product.
- A WBS can be expressed to any level of detail. While, the top three levels are the minimum recommended any program or contract needs for reporting purposes, effective management of complex programs requires WBS definition at considerably lower levels.
But the WBS is just one part of the tools needed for a successful project. The WBS is part of the Performance Measurement Baseline (PMB). Here's a PMI Workshop briefing on that topic.
