The notion that bottom up, self motivated, "it's all about me," view of agile needs to be examined in the context of what kind of software is being built.
I don't work in the environment where it is "all about me and my self actualization." It's about the mission, the vision, the "team," and the promises made to the customer - which many times is a government agency.
