The role of Systems Engineering says what its name says - "engineering of systems." SE is found on most every project outside of IT projects. SE provides the "glue" that integrates all the parts of the project and ensures that theser parts all work together in ways that individual engineering and project management can't.
Here's an introductory course on Systems Engineering from NASA. Each of the modules has soemting to say about projects and systems engineering in general. While the examples are of spacecraft, the principles are applicable to nearly every project.
