We hear all the time, pithy statements about teams, teaming, team building, enabling team that provide innovation, and most every soft skill ever thought of, applied to managing projects. At the project below, where I was one of many program managers, we came to realize one fundamental truth about teams -
If you have a team who is your opponent?
Having played team sports at the High School, College, and competitive adult level, our teams always played against an opposing team. Much of the team building platitudes seem to ignore that teams are formed to play other teams, score points, win games, overcome obstacles, and participate in competition.
